These are such lovely recs! I will be in daisetzuan next week for 3 days (6-9), and Kamikochi on the 14-16 but would love to know what you recommend in the interim! I was looking at either rebun island or hakuba but I’m open to any recs :)
Oh thank you! I have never been to Hakuba but was in Rebun right around this time last year. The flower season will be long gone, but it is still a wonderful destination if the weather cooperates and one of the most memorable places in Japan for nature sceneries. Don’t hesitate to email/DM if you would like to discuss further.
I heard about Aomori first time through your letters and saved on my future trips list. But most probably i will be staying in Kansai region on my trip later this year 🤷♂️😊
Lovely photos and places. Kamikochi is a place I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time. I’ve been to Nagano so many times, and even lived there for a few years, but never made it up there.
Sapporo local here, one driver's note for anyone trying Daisetsuzan this month: on the Sounkyo side, the roads up to Ginsendai and Kogen Onsen close to private cars during the peak (Ginsendai through Sep 23, Kogen Onsen Sep 19–30 this year, per Kamikawa town). And Asahidake's average first snowfall is Sep 25, so the window really is as narrow as you describe. Lovely letter — Oku-Nikko just went on my list.
It’s true that Kyoto gets a lot of visitors during peak autumn season, but there are so many places where you can be alone under the autumn leaves. Everyone goes to the same 5 places. I lived in Kyoto and never had a problem escaping the crowds.
