The different layers and textures, especially seeing patches of snow/ice juxtaposed with colorful flowers and bright green, are really mesmerizing. Almost like nature and its forces had a field day of just painting whatever it felt like, like getting to see it in a wild frenzy rather than organized and categorized as we’re used to seeing it. I would not say too strenuous. The one I described is the hike that leads to Kurokadake through Susoaidaira Valley but you can do the same via Asahidake. I have done both and loved the first one better for the scenery. As for the bear situation, it was quite grim - there has been a sighting almost everyday.

Thank you for introducing those of us who haven't heard of Daisetsuzan National Park to it's stunning views - I am reminded of the Tongariro Alpine crossing in New Zealand, with its craters, green fields and the variety of land shapes a National Park offers. How beautiful and one to add to the list!

I really want to do that hike in Northern Island. I have been to the south a few times but never to the north.
Summer in Japan may be hot, but it certainly is beautiful!
