Wow I loved this! I canโt wait to read more about your journey! I was able to spent 1 month on Kyushu in between May and June last year and it was perhaps my favourite place out of my 3 month Japan trip! Yakushima got my heart, so loved seeing your photos from your hikes there too. You captured the special soul of the island so beautifully. Thank you for sharing Burcu.
your photos always blow me away Burcu, thank you for sharing this beautiful letter. And the link to David Gilbert's hike of the Shikoku Pilgrimage is absolutely wonderful. Saved!
This is a very good "Letter from Japan" with excellent photographs. I am a professional photographer and video producer and have been living in this country for half a century but Burcu's posts are some of the best guides and descriptions I've come across. Now 76, with shaky legs and difficulty to climb stairs or otherwise I am wondering if you could provide us with some gentle walks for the elderly who aren't that fir anymore. Many thanks for your work.
Loved this one! Can't wait to do some of these in the coming years <3 Also, thanks for the link to the afar magazine, the article also mentioned Madhya Pradesh, My home state as one of the top destinations, which is pretty cool :)
Mmmm so many delicious walks that I could feast on through your words and images. So many places to see. I hope to get to Okinawa at some point. Inspiring, thank you.
What a beautiful letter, Burcu. While the snowy Tokyo scenes were poetic, it was actually the Okinawa photos that stayed with me the most. When I was younger, I travelled solo around Ishigaki and some of the smaller islands as a backpacker, so your descriptions brought back very vivid memories. The light, the humidity, the feeling of being somewhere completely different from mainland Japan. Your reflections on Iriomote especially reminded me how diverse and surprising this country can be.
I also loved how you moved from the softness of snow in Tokyo to the wild landscapes of the south and then all the way up to Hokkaido. You truly make us feel the geography rather than simply read about it. Thank you for sharing this journey.
Great article and some beautiful pictures!
